Shared bicycle traffic rules

1. The lanes for cycling are generally divided into motor vehicle lanes, non motor vehicle lanes, and sidewalks. Some roads are not distinguished, and the rules for distinguishing between them and undifferentiated roads are different for shared cycling.

Shared bicycles belong to non motorized vehicles, and according to relevant laws, non motorized vehicles should drive on roads with three different lanes and go their own way.

When driving on roads that are not divided into three lanes, follow the rules of driving between motor vehicles and driving alongside non motor vehicles.

2. The relevant laws and regulations on driving on the right stipulate that “motor vehicles and non motor vehicles shall operate on the right side”, which seems to be a well-known rule in China, but knowing may not necessarily mean doing.

For example, non motorized lanes are generally bidirectional, but in cities with heavy traffic, it is very difficult for bicycles to pass through intersections, requiring them to avoid left, right, straight, and ubiquitous pedestrians. In order to save trouble, many drivers choose to go in the opposite direction.

In reality, the risk of bicycle retrograde is relatively low, and it is not a key surveillance object for traffic police. Generally, it will not be subject to administrative penalties, so people do not take bicycle retrograde seriously.

No one is allowed to drive a bicycle under the age of 12.

At the beginning of the use of shared bicycles, children riding bicycles could be seen everywhere. When merchants realized the danger, they took the measure of reminding them that shared bicycles would be prominently displayed on the vehicle body with a message saying “Do not drive bicycles under the age of twelve”.

But the phenomenon of cycling under the age of twelve is still repeatedly prohibited.

Prohibiting children from riding bicycles not only involves the prudent reminder obligation of merchants, but also involves the guardianship responsibility of children’s guardians. As merchants have no effective way to restrict children of unsuitable age from riding bicycles apart from reminders, the responsibility of guardians is of utmost importance for the safety of children.

[Legal basis]: Article 72 of the Regulations for the Implementation of the Road Traffic Safety Law of the Road Traffic Safety Law of the People’s Republic of China stipulates that driving bicycles, tricycles, electric bicycles and disabled motorized wheelchairs on the road shall comply with the following provisions: (1) Driving bicycles and tricycles must be at least 12 years old; (2) Drivers of electric bicycles and disabled motorized wheelchairs must be at least 16 years old; (3) Do not drive under the influence of alcohol; (4) Before turning, slow down and signal with your hand.
